nightride.com uses standardised cabin categories. This makes it easier to compare offers from different operators. Find out more about the service levels of each operator.

On nightride.com, there are three cabin categories: sleeping car, couchette car, and seating car. The service level for each cabin category varies depending on the operator.

To make it easier for you to compare, we use consistent cabin categories for all operators on nightride.com.

In the following overview, you can see which nightride.com categories correspond to the respective operator categories. You'll also see the service levels for each operator's categories.

Trenitalia

The Trenitalia logo

All Intercity Notte night trains have sleeping cars (Vagone Letto Relax / Superior) and couchette cars (Cucetta Comfort). On most routes, seating cars (Posto a sedere - EASY) are also available.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: made-up beds, washbasin, sometimes a WC/shower, a towel, a travel kit, bottles of water, a daily newspaper, and breakfast. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

You'll share the compartment with other travellers if you're travelling alone (or, for example, if two of you book a 4-person couchette). However, you can also book a 4-person couchette for private use.

The compartments can also be booked exclusively for women, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these are labelled "women-only".

Night train: Seats

Service level: a comfortable seat, seat reservation included, and a fold-out table at your seat. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

ÖBB

The ÖBB logo

With its Nightjet (NJ) connections, ÖBB operates a large fleet of different night trains. The night trains run with sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars.

There are "old" Nightjets and the "Nightjet of the new generation", which have different features. The Nightjet of the new generation is also marketed with the "comfort" label.

The Nightjet of the new generation also features Mini Cabins. A Mini Cabin offers a level of comfort similar to a couchette. However, you can close it off from other travellers for more privacy. It's a bit like a pod in a Japanese capsule hotel.

The compartments on partner railways, with which ÖBB operates the so-called Euronight (EN) trains, may have slightly different names and features.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: made-up beds, washbasin, optional WC & shower, sometimes a table, a towel, a travel kit, a bottle of water, an à la carte breakfast, a wake-up service, and power sockets. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

You'll share the compartment with other travellers if you're travelling alone (or, for example, if two of you book a "Triple"). If your group size matches the number of places in the booked compartment, you'll usually have it all to yourself / yourselves. This is also how it's indicated on nightride.com.

Sleeper cabins are usually occupied by people of the same gender.

Night train: Couchette car and Mini Cabin

Service level: blankets and sheets to make your own bed, washrooms and toilets in the car, a towel, a travel kit, a bottle of water, breakfast (two rolls, jam, butter, and coffee or tea), a wake-up service, and power sockets. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Couchettes are available in 4-person, 5-person, 6-person, and modernised 4-person compartments. The latter are found on the Nightjet of the new generation and sometimes on older trains, and are labelled "comfort" on nightjet.com.

The compartments can also be booked as private compartments and exclusively for women, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these options are labelled "women-only".

DB

The Deutsche Bahn logo

Deutsche Bahn's night trains have seating cars.

Night train: Seats

2nd class service level: seat pitch of 86 to 97cm, at least 80cm of legroom, a table depending on the seat, power sockets, and an on-board restaurant depending on the connection.

1st class service level: seat pitch of 93 to 102cm, at least 88cm of legroom, Wi-Fi (depending on the connection), a reading light, an on-board restaurant depending on the connection, and access to the DB Lounge at stations with a Flexpreis ticket.

Regiojet

The Regiojet logo

Regiojet operates night trains and night buses. The night trains have couchette cars and seating cars. The night buses have different seat categories.

Night train: Couchette car

Service level: bed linen, Wi-Fi, breakfast, coffee, a bottle of water, daily newspapers, an entertainment portal, and a wake-up service. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

3/4-person couchette Berth – Sleeping car

You'll share the compartment with other travellers if you're travelling alone (or, for example, if two of you book a 3-person compartment). If your group size matches the booked compartment, you'll usually have it all to yourself / yourselves. This is also how it's indicated on nightride.com. You can also book a compartment for your private use.

The compartments can also be booked exclusively for women, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these options are labelled "women-only".

Support is available for passengers with reduced mobility. To request this service, select the fare for passengers with reduced mobility when booking.

Night train: Seats

Service in all categories: seat reservation included, bottles of water, and newspapers. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Depending on the route, you can choose from the following seat categories on Regiojet night trains:

  • Low Cost: Non-reclining seats, Wi-Fi, and a bottle of water.
  • Standard: Reclining seats, 6-person compartments, Wi-Fi, power sockets, coffee, other drinks, and free parking at the station.
  • Relax: Reclining seats, compartments for up to 6 people, tables, Wi-Fi, power sockets, coffee, drinks, and free parking at the station.
  • Business: Reclining seats, compartments for up to 4 people, a private table, Wi-Fi, power sockets, coffee, drinks, and free parking at the station.

Night bus: Seats

Depending on the route, you can choose from the following seat categories on Regiojet night buses. All seats come with a seat reservation:

  • Standard: Reclining seats, tables, a WC, Wi-Fi, (USB) power sockets, and snacks and refreshments available for purchase.
  • Relax: Extra comfortable seats, more legroom, tables, individual entertainment screens, a WC, Wi-Fi, power sockets, free hot drinks, and newspapers on some routes. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

European Sleeper

The European Sleeper logo

European Sleeper's night trains have sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: a made-up bed with a duvet, a washbasin in the compartment, toilets in the car, a wake-up service on request, a towel & toiletries included, breakfast, and mineral water & a welcome drink included. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

The 3-person compartment can also be booked exclusively for women (labelled "Women Only" on the European Sleeper website), as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these options are labelled "women-only".

Night train: Couchette car

Service level: a made-up couchette with a blanket, pillow, and sheet, toilets and washing facilities in the car, a wake-up service on request, mineral water included, breakfast available as an optional add-on, and other snacks & drinks available from the train crew.

Private / shared 5-person couchette Classic (5-Personen-Abteil)

You'll share the compartment with other travellers. However, you can also book a compartment for your private use. Unlike the 6-person compartment, the 5-person compartment has air conditioning.

The 5-person compartments can also be booked exclusively for women, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these compartments are labelled "women-only".

Additionally, there are couchette compartments called Comfort Standard, which can be occupied by a maximum of three people. These are also equipped with a proper mattress that is placed on the couchette.

SNCF

The SNCF logo

The night trains from the French rail operator SNCF are called Intercités de Nuit. They run with couchette cars and seating cars.

Night train: Couchette car

Service level: a couchette with a pillow and a thin sleeping bag (which replaces the sheet and blanket), toilets and washing facilities in the car, 1 bottle of mineral water, a sleep mask and earplugs, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and a shower at the arrival station (depending on the station).

You'll share the compartment with other travellers. However, you can also book a compartment for your private use. To do so, select the "Espace Privatif" fare when booking.

Twiliner

The Twiliner logo

Twiliner is the first bus company in Europe that lets you travel and sleep lying down. At the touch of a button, your seat transforms into a completely flat bed.

All reclining seats come with a sheet, pillow, and blanket. You can eat and work at a small table. You have personal storage space, a reading light, and a USB-C port to charge your electronic devices. You also have free Wi-Fi during the journey.

BTE Autoreisezug

BTE offers a motorail train from Hamburg to Lörrach (on the Swiss border). In addition to transporting vehicles, the train also offers couchette and sleeping cars.

Washrooms and WCs are located in the car. Breakfast is included in all available categories. Snacks and drinks are also available for purchase in the evening.

Night train: Sleeping car

Unlike the couchette cars, the sleeping cars have air conditioning. They can only be booked privately, meaning you book the entire compartment for a maximum of three people.

Couchette places can be booked privately / for sole use, or you can reserve individual places in a compartment with other travellers.

The "Couchette Plus" compartments offer a little more comfort.
