Routes on which the Nightjet of the new generation is running
Since December 2023, the new generation NightJets have been in operation. The new night trains currently run in Austria, Germany, and Italy.
Since December 2023, the Nightjets of the new generation have been in operation. The ÖBB's new night trains are so popular that people are willing to take detours just to enjoy travelling in them. By now, the new Nightjets are running on various routes – time for an update (Fall 2025).
On which routes you can enjoy the new Nightjet.
As of November 2025, the new Nightjets operate on the following routes:
- Hamburg to Vienna (NJ 491, since December 2023)
- Vienna to Hamburg (NJ 490, since December 2023)
- Hamburg to Innsbruck (NJ 40491, since December 2023)
- Innsbruck to Hamburg (NJ 40420, since December 2023)
- Bregenz to Vienna (NJ 447, since March 2024)
- Vienna to Bregenz (NJ 446, since March 2024)
- Vienna to Rome (NJ 40233, since September 2024)
- Rome to Vienna (NJ 40294, since September 2024)
- Munich to Rome (NJ 295, since December 2024)
- Rome to Munich (NJ 294, since December 2024)
- Amsterdam to Innsbruck/Munich (NJ 421, since May 2025)
- Innsbruck/Munich to Amsterdam (NJ 420, since May 2025)
- Amsterdam to Vienna (NJ 40421, since May 2025)
- Vienna to Amsterdam (NJ 40490, since May 2025).
- From the beginning of December 2025: Zurich / Basel to Hamburg (NJ 470)
- From the beginning of December 2025: Hamburg to Zurich / Basel (NJ 471)
Currently uncertain, but planned:
- Zurich to Amsterdam (NJ 402) – this connection will get new carriages with ensuite douches and toilettes, however, not the new Nightjet yet
- Amsterdam to Zurich (NJ 403) – this connection will get new carriages with ensuite douches and toilettes, however, not the new Nightjet yet
Overall, ÖBB will receive 24 new Nightjet trains by mid‑2026 (the original order covered 33 trainsets, part of which will now be used in daytime service as Railjet). These trains will operate in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.
What happens to the old wagons?
The deployment of the new Nightjets also positively impacts countries and routes where the new trains are not in service: ÖBB is modernizing some of the older, released rolling stock (keyword: Nightjet Upgrade) and deploying it on other routes.
Thanks to the modernized Nightjets, you can already travel more comfortably between Zurich and Hamburg / Hamburg and Zurich. Additionally, since 2023, there has been a night train once again connecting Paris and Berlin / Berlin and Paris. Unfortunately, these were now cancelled due to a lack of governmental subsidies.
