Travelling from Amsterdam to Vienna by night train is a convenient option. Here's all about my experience that I recently had.

I have a conference in Vienna upcoming, so how do I get there from Amsterdam?
I don’t need to overthink it! Of course I take the train. From previous trips to Vienna I know that the city at the Danube is very well accessible by train. ÖBB nightjet is one of the few operators that runs trains across countries and I know their connection between Amsterdam and Vienna is very good.

So I start exploring my options, of course through nightride.com. I quickly find a well priced option at a convenient time and easily book a 3 person sleeper.

A couple of days later my train boards at 19:00. I arrive 10 to 7 at the station where my train is ready for departure. What I love about night trains: you just get your suitcase and get on board of your train. No complicated check-in procedure, long lines or stressful situations at the airport.

Once in the train I have the compartment to myself until Düsseldorf. I have not had a similar compartment yet, so I start exploring, and quickly I find that there is a private toilet and even a shower!

Especially the private toilet is great to have close by in the night. There is also a little goodie bag with sleeping mask, earplugs, some sweets, hotel slippers and the breakfast menu that I fill in for the next morning. There is ample choice for organic yogurts, honey and jams. I’m already looking forward.

The beds are not yet made, so that gives me also space to continue working a bit. There’s no WiFi on this train, so I have to connect with my mobile network.

In Düsseldorf there is a lovely German lady boarding the train with whom I get the opportunity to practice my German. We talk for a while about our plans in Vienna and before we know it the train conductor comes to make our beds.

Next morning around 08:00 we’re woken with fresh breakfast, shortly arriving in the heart of the city. I’ve had a good nights sleep, being rocked to sleep by the train and fully refreshed for my conference.
